LAYING ON OF HANDS
PART 2

Mark 16:17 “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

(18) They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

Last week we began to look at the importance of the commandment that Jesus gave “they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” It is a command with a promise. Lay hands on the sick and they SHALL recover.

This is a command that we have to Act on in faith. We know that we are not the one that is causing the healing, we are only doing what Jesus said we are to do for those that are sick. We also know that there is more to the laying on of hands than for healing. There is the laying on of hands for the transfer of authority. Moses laid hands on Joshua when it was time for the children of Israel to go int the promised land. Paul had hands laid upon him for two things, haling and to be filled with the Holy Ghost: Acts 9:17 “And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.” And then again for the purpose of authority to minister: Acts 13:2 “As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

(3) And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.”

So many Christians love God, but fail to do what He has called us to do because they were never taught that should believe what the Bible says. Everybody knows that Jesus laid hands on the sick and healed many people. But they won’t try it because they have been taught that Jesus is superior to all mankind and it would be sacrilegious to attempt to do what He did. That is only a phony religious attempt at being humble. Jesus wants us humble before Him, but we are to be bold in doing His work. Jesus said that we would do greater works than He had done: John 14:12 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” This is the revelation that we need to walk in. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO DO GREAT FEATS, IN HIS NAME! To fully understand this we need to look at the ‘chain of command’ that God has set up. I don’t think that anyone doubts that God gave all power and authority to Jesus while He walked this earth. For those who may doubt it we have scripture that confirms this: John 3:35 “The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.” This is only one of many that prove this point. Matthew 28:18 “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”

We have to assume that because He healed all that came to Him, He had authority over ALL sickness and ALL diseases. Jesus practiced what God told Him to do. Everything that Jesus did was a model for us. We are to do what He did. He obeyed the Father by laying hands on the sick, WE are to obey the Father and lay hands on the sick. In proof of this we see that Jesus instructed His disciples to do just what He was doing: Matthew 10:1 “And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.”; Acts 5:12 “And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.” This is not just a figure of speech. They did just what Jesus had taught them to do. Lay hands on people. Matthew 28:19 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (20) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: . . .” We are to teah ALL things that He taught and that includes the laying on of hands. Because we have failed to keep this teaching, most of the Body of Christ suffers from sickness and disease. I’m sure that you’ve heard some say that all of that died with the disciples. If that is so then all the people that have been healed by Smith Wigglesworth have to give up all their healings. All that got healed at Azuza street, have to give up their healings. Jesus made disciples by teaching them what to do. He told them to go out and make disciples of all men. They were to teach others what Jesus taught them. That process wass to continue until His return.

Luke 10:19 “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Why do we question our authority over the devil? Why do we allow ourselves to be subjected to all of the things of the curse? I have heard people say that they are suffering for Jesus. Why? He suffered for us so we wouldn’t have to. I have heard people say; “Jesus knows that I am sick and he will heal me in His own time.” 1 Peter 2:24 “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” The church, for the most part, does not believe this truth. But it is not stated just once, but many times: James 5:15 “And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.” Jesus commanded us to lay hands on the sick, we read where Paul laid hands on the sick. Peter would just walk down the street and his shadow would heal people. Church, we have authority on this earth that we are not taking advantage of to build the kingdom of God. So many of the intellectuals in the church can’t understand how the laying on of hands can actually accomplish anything, but it is not for us to understand, it is just our part to obey. Isaiah 55:8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.” Something happens when we do what God commands us to do.

Numbers 8:10 “And thou shalt bring the Levites before the LORD: and the children of Israel shall put their hands upon the Levites:

(11) And Aaron shall offer the Levites before the LORD for an offering of the children of Israel, that they may execute the service of the LORD.” Here God was transferring the Spirit of God onto those that would be the priests for the nation of Israel. This happened through the laying on of hands. Another example is when the children of Israel were ready to go into the promised land, Moses was told that he wasn’t going and that he would be gathered as his brother Aaron was. Moses asked God to set another over the children of Israel. Numbers 27:18 “And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;

(23) And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.”

Here the power and authority that was vested in Moses was transferred to Joshua, by the laying on of hands. It was done in front of all of Israel so that they would see that Joshua now had the authority that Moses walked in.

Because Jesus is not here on earth and we are His body, we have been given His authority: Matthew 10:1 “And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.” After Jesus ascended the apostles continued on with His work, laying on of hands. Acts 4:33 “And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.” Somewhere, somehow it stopped. Somebody came up with a ‘better idea’ that has taken the power of the church and put it up on a shelf and now the Body of Christ has no more power than the rest of the world.

The good news is, that power is still available to those who wish to tap into it.

There are times when there is so much doubt and unbelief that Jesus couldn’t even do anything: Mark 6:2 “And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?

(3) Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

(4) But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

Jesus is telling us that these people did not believe in this doctrine, they did not believe that Jesus had the power or authority to do what He taught and the result was, even He could only do a little.

(5) And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.”

But when there is faith, we see a different result: Mark 7:32 “And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.” Here they saw the importance of laying on of hands and the results were quite different: Mark 7:35 “And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.”

In the days of Jesus there were many incurable diseases. One of those diseases was leprosy. You can get it by touching one that has the disease. But the practice of laying on of hands is not deterred because of what man can not cure. Mark 1:40 “And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

(41) And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.

(42) And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.”

The power of God flowed through the hands of Jesus to heal all those He touched. God’s power flowed through the hands of Moses to empower the leaders of his time. God’s power flowed through Paul’s hands to heal, impart the Holy Ghost, to give gifts, to perform miracles: and His power will flow through your hands to do the same things and your obedience will bring the same results obedience did for Paul.

Remember Jesus told us: John 14:12 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

When we hear that all of that passed away with the disciples, we have to ignore that teaching. Paul healed people by laying on of hands that we find in scripture: Acts 28:8 “And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.” Word of this went around the island that he was on at the time, Melita, and many that were sick were brought to Paul for healing: Acts 28:9 “So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:”

Our responsibility as the Body of Christ is to do what Jesus has commanded us to do the way that he commanded us to do it.

Christ is coming back for a spotless church and the only way the church will be spotless is for it to do everything that Jesus has commanded us to do. Then and only then will we see the church walking in the full power we were intended to walk in.

All scripture is KJV unless otherwise noted.
