CAN AMERICA BECOME A GODLY NATION AGAIN?

Taking America back from the secularists is a hot topic among Christians. Great controversy surrounds how it can best be done. Many say the problem is that the godless left is determinedly united while we Christians are divided amongst ourselves. They say we must show a unified front if we ever expect to become a force to be reckoned with. A noble goal, but how do we accomplish it?

The only way we can begin to accomplish the goal of uniting Christian brothers and sisters is to realize that the secularists are not the problem. The left doesn't seem to have any problem when election time comes around or when it comes time to rally together for some dastardly cause they champion. They know they don't want anything to do with God or His will for their lives and they vote and act accordingly. These sorts of people have been around since the fall of man and will be here until the end of time. The real problem is with the Christians. Having been immersed in a secular culture, not surprisingly, most Christians do not have a Christian worldview. We have been evolutionized and even some of the most devout are far more secularized in their thinking than they realize. Biblical principles are willingly compromised. We will apply Scripture to internal things, but decide to use our "common sense" for other things.

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. II Chronicles 7:14

God was talking to ancient Israel above, but no doubt this verse appropriately speaks to us today. We had an example here recently in California with the governor's race. The top brass of the GOP backed Arnold Schwarzenegger. The polls said he was the only one who could beat the Democrats. Wanting to win the election at any cost for someone with the Republican label behind his name, many people who call themselves Christians voted for Schwarzenegger, who is pro-abortion and pro-homosexual rights. Is it any wonder that the attack on the family continues in our society? Who are Christians going to blame? And what message have we just sent to the Republican Party? We let them know that they can abandon the pro-life platform and all family values and still get elected. What kind of message have we sent to godly candidates like Tom McClintock who give so much of themselves to run for office? We have told them don't bother to run because we won't vote for you. We just assured ourselves that the Republican Party will continue it's leftward slide. Many Christians told me that at least Schwarzenegger is probably more fiscally conservative than the Democrats. Even if that is true, are you telling me that Christians are now more concerned about their pocketbooks than the life of the precious children being slaughtered in the womb and of God's institution of marriage and the family? How low can we get?

I recently had a reader who told me that we Christians must stick together and support President Bush. I referred her to my " O Christians Awake" article pointing out the many un-Christian things he has done. Not the least among them is signing some pro-homosexual bills, requesting that we rejoin the godless universal school board, UNESCO, and his biggest ever spending on social programs. Is Bush to think he has a mandate to continue on in his godless ways? Her response was that it is the only way that we have a chance at beating out the Democrats next year. Is that what this is about? Winning an election? What for? Are winning elections by voting for people of ungodly principles whether they have a "D" or an "R" after their name going to bring America back to its godly heritage?

When I call a fellow Christian to the carpet and ask why he/she voted for an ungodly candidate, I am always told that at least they are better than the Democrat. And anyway God is in charge so it doesn't really matter. Huh? You can't have it both ways. Why then are they so mad at the secularists taking over if God is in charge? And if it doesn't really matter what we Christians do, then why bother to vote at all? We need to understand that God gives us the government that we deserve. I believe in the sovereignty of God, too but the Bible is also very clear about individual responsibility and accountability. God is in control but it does not take away anyone's responsibility from doing what is right. Besides, if you really believe God is in control then why are you so afraid of doing the right thing? That is the only way we can receive God's blessing.

Last of all we have those Christians who don't vote at all because they think it is too "worldly". Romans chapter 13 tells us that God created government for our good. When we have been given the rare privilege of choosing our own leaders how can we expect anything good if Christians aren't even involved in the process? In the Bible there is no distinction between secular and spiritual things. God's lordship applies to all things. When God gives us the opportunity to choose godly leaders but we don't participate, I repeat, we will get the government that we deserve.

We all have a duty before God to do what is right on this earth for as long as He allows us to be here. Is winning elections with socialists or anti-family persons just because they have an "R" behind their names really going to save America? I hope you can see that only pleasing God will do that. Is your hope in God or in the election process? Is God really sovereign? If you truly believe that, remember it the next time you are called on to be a part, however big or small, of the political process. He promises to heal our land if we who are called by His name will change our wicked ways. Everything we do is to be for the glory of God. That includes choosing leaders that are pleasing to Him. If everyone who called himself/herself by His name were to unify themselves around His Word in regard to every aspect of their lives, we would once again certainly be a force to reckon with.
