BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS

It is funny how often we read a word and don't stop and think about what it really means.

Words have meaning...they communicate a thought. Failure to understand the meaning of a word can lead to a wrong conclusion.

That often happens to all of us, especially if we don't take the time to stop and think. Jesus told us that “you have heard, but you have not understood.” I would like to paraphrase His clear statement with this thought: You have read, but you have not understood.

That is why I often keep a dictionary by my side...especially when I read and write. Wrong assumptions lead to wrong conclusions. Such it is with this Scripture.

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” -Matt: 5:9

That verse is part of what is commonly called “The Sermon on the Mount” which is the greatest treatise on how to live that the world has ever been given.

It is laced with references to a new way of doing things...a new way of living, really...that has sustained our culture for 2000 years.

“You have heard it said...but I say unto you...” The Gospel, as articulated by Our Lord, was a transformation from a system of man-made rules and regulations to a law written on the heart. Christianity is an issue of the heart. Religion is man's attempt to legislate holiness. The letter of the law kills but the Spirit gives life. Jesus can set you free from religion.

But “peacemaker” is one of those words that I always had a hard time gulping down my gullet. At least until I looked it up in the dictionary.

Peacemaker: A person who ESTABLISHES peace.

“Peacemaking” speaks of authority. It conjures up images of a power/authority who comes and establishes peace where previously there had been conflict, danger, and confusion. Peacemakers bring the hammer down. They “establish justice.” All peace emanates from justice.

What is that sign you see all of the time at civil rights marches...NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE.

According to Jesus, peacemakers are a blessing. In fact, they will be recognized as the children of God.

Wow. True authority is recognized as being an attribute of the children of God. All authority and all power comes from God. The exercise of that authority by the children of God will be recognizable to the world as the power of justice moving through the lives of men.

Blessed are the peacemakers...

But please notice what it does not say. Blessed are the peaceKEEPERS. A peaceKEEPER and a peaceMAKER are not the same thing. Yet we act as if they were the same. Permit me to explain.

I grew up as one of five children. Back in the good ole days mothers had the luxury of staying home with their children. My father was a factory worker and he earned enough for us to live a solid middle-class lifestyle. But my Mom had to hold the home front down while Dad earned the bacon.

My sister Jane was the first-born, followed by four rambunctious boys who constantly fought to establish our position in the pecking order. Our dear mother spent most of her time refereeing the skirmishes that my brothers and I were constantly engaging in. When Mom had run out of patience, as well as solutions, she always dropped the bomb that made us all shiver with fright.

“You wait until your father gets home.” I still nearly wet my pants just replaying the sound in my head.

You see, my Mom was a peaceKEEPER. It was her job to represent the true authority of the family, my father. She was his representative to an unruly family. We had been warned by our father that Mom was the boss in his absence.

But Mom was soft and loving...a mother's heart...and we learned to take advantage of her kindness. Eventually, we would override her peacekeeping efforts and the day would degenerate into chaos. That is when she would appeal to a higher authority... ”you wait until your father gets home.”

We all knew what that meant...justice and authority was arriving when the Ford Station Wagon came rolling up the driveway. We were about to discover the difference between a peaceKEEPER and a peaceMAKER.

Isn't it interesting...Jesus said that the peaceMAKERS...those who carried the authority of God...would be recognized by the world as children of God.

The dictionary calls a peacekeeper “a person who maintains or restores peace.” Do you see it? A peaceMAKER establishes peace. A peaceKEEPER merely maintains it. In fact, the Scriptures tell us, "And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”

Even the lost recognized the authority with which He spoke. Jesus was a peaceMAKER...not a peaceKEEPER. In fact, they called Him the Prince of Peace. A Prince is a child of a King. The King, our ultimate authority, is represented by His children in his absence. “Occupy till I return.”

In Luke 10 Jesus bestowed that authority upon us. “Behold I give you the power to tread on serpents and scorpions; and of all the power of the enemy...”

Blessed are the peackeMAKERS. When did the church determine we were merely peaceKEEPERS?

Our enemies are militant while we remain passive. Then Jesus said “ALL AUTHORITY IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH IS GIVEN UNTO ME.”

Authority is necessary for the establishment of peace. We are the emissaries of the Prince of Peace who told us to “go therefore into all the world...”

Just look at where we are, Christian America. All semblance of authority has left the church. Oh, we talk about authority, we talk about the power of God, we sing about victory in Jesus, but the reality is Christians have bowed their knees to every edict of un-godly government, begging in servitude for our “right” to not have to pay for the murder of pre-born children. Cowardly pastors teach their sheeple that Romans 13 demands strict obedience to demonic government and it's diabolical decisions.

All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given unto Him...Jesus does not bow his knee to the edicts of the US Supreme Court nor the Criminal Class masquerading as “government.” Jesus has already legislated morality...called the Laws of Nature and of Natures God by Thomas Jefferson...and it is the job of His children to exercise HIS authority on the earth.

Compromise is deadly. They call it the art of politics. But truth is not open for political debate or legislative action. Compromise is weakness, a shedding of authority, a dilution of the truth, and Jesus warned us that a little leaven (compromise) dilutes the entire loaf.

Compromise is leaven. Compromise is a yielding of God-granted authority. Compromise is peaceKEEPING. Blessed are the peaceMAKERS...they will be recognized as children who move under the authority of God.

So where does your church stand? Does your church ACTIVELY engage in ending of abortion? Does your pastor exercise his God-ordained authority to guarantee justice for the unborn? Doe he ACTIVELY oppose the homosexual agenda in your local public school? Does he OPENLY and ACTIVELY oppose the usurpation of God's authority by the tyrannical beast of government?

Or does he merely appeal to Republicans, conservatives, and Rush Limbaugh to speak the oracles of God to an out of control America? Why would any pastor expect a politician to do what a man of God will not?

The church has fallen to political correctness. It is full of compromise. The authority granted to His church has not been stolen, it has been surrendered. To raise up and fight would bring a great deal of conflict to the church.

And that is a no no. The church is no longer a peaceMAKER, it has become a peaceKEEPER...that is why the world no longer recognizes the church as the children of God...nor His Word as the ultimate authority in the world.

We are engaged in a great Spiritual war. There is no neutral ground. Can you name one compromise the Devil has made, or is it the “children of God”, in the spirit of compromise, who have yielded to peaceKEEPING.

Is homosexuality getting more prevalent and aggressive? Is baby-murder becoming more accessible? Is religious freedom on the rise or on the wane? Has the access to pornography been diminished by any of the efforts of the church? Are our political leaders becoming more or less brazen in their lying?

Compromise...the desire to keep peace...is destroying the Christian foundation of this nation.

“Do not think that I came to bring peace, but a sword,” Jesus instructed us.

Blessed are the peaceMAKERS...the unyielding...the uncompromising...the salt of the earth.

It is time for us to come out of the closet and be recognized as the “children of God.”

I have to wonder if the Lord even recognizes his children anymore...
