WHO ARE THE WINNERS AND LOSERS SINCE SEPTEMBER 11, 2001?

It has now been one year since the shocking attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. It seems like a good time, therefore, to ask the question, "Who are the winners and losers since that fateful day?" Since space will not permit me to list them all, here is a thumbnail sketch of the top winner and top loser.

Top Winner: The Muslim Religion

At no time in the history of Western Civilization has Islam enjoyed a greater degree of notoriety than it does today. We have heard President Bush repeatedly praise the Muslim religion as a "great" religion. Bush and other government spokesmen have redundantly championed the Muslim faith, even going so far as to join Muslims in the worship of Allah and Mohammed and to invite Muslim leaders to gatherings at the White House. Muslim clerics have even been afforded opportunities to pray to Allah on behalf of the American people.

The net result of all this fawning over the Muslim religion is that Islam is now the fastest growing religion in both the U.S. and Europe. Incredibly, there have been more western converts to Islam during the past year than during any year on record.

Beyond that, there has been no clear victory in Afghanistan. We are now being told that our troops must stay there indefinitely. There is no exit strategy whatsoever. In all probability, Osama Bin Laden is still alive. His successful attacks against America have emboldened militant Muslims throughout the Middle East from which Israel is already paying a heavy toll. Furthermore, instead of being viewed as an outcast, Saddam Hussein now has the entire Muslim world behind him.

Top Loser: Constitutional Government

Since September 11, 2001, the federal government has increased power unto itself at a pace not seen in over a century. Bush's new Homeland Security Department, the USA Patriot Act, and scores of other edicts and laws have virtually expunged the Bill of Rights and dismantled constitutional government.

We now have citizen spies watching our every move, federal agents controlling our nation's airports, electronic spying and eavesdropping devices going up everywhere, phone companies being pressured by federal agencies for the technology to monitor private phone calls, the nation's libraries being put under constant surveillance, and the list goes on without end. Big Brother is here in a big way!

What terrorists could not do on September 11, 2001, our own federal government is doing. It is dismantling our constitutional republic piece-by-piece and is replacing our Christian heritage by assuming the role of evangelist for the religion of Islam.

However, as long as there is a remnant of freedom loving Christians (and other lovers of freedom) who are willing to stand in the gap and resist our enemies (foreign and domestic), liberty and constitutional government will triumph. As God would have spared Sodom and Gomorrah for the sake of ten righteous persons, perhaps He would spare these United States for the same reason. It would really help, however, if that righteous remnant would start standing up!
