EXODUS: GOD vs. THE MAGICIANS OF PHARAOH
PART 1 of 2

For those of you who had ever watched Cecil B. DeMill’s movie called “The Ten Commandments” you were treated to a spectacular cinematic treat. In an epic conflict, God, through Moses, gave Pharaoh Ramses II a “Cosmic Slap-down” and delivered His children from 430 years (Ex. 12:41) of Egyptian bondage. The new version of this movie, now being called: “Exodus”, was a dismal flop. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Nevertheless, a lot more had happened between Moses, Pharaoh and the Magicians of Pharaoh then we realize, and many other events surrounding the 10 Plagues of Egypt that we never were taught in Sunday school, or in Church (Worship Services).

We are going to “tear through the veil” and examine many different facets of those events surrounding Moses and the 10 Plagues of Egypt:

1) Moses, at first, didn’t want to do the job
2) Pharaoh was bored with Moses’ initial performance
3) Aaron was positively “psyched” to be part of it all
4) Magicians were seemingly duplicating the miracles of God
5) While millions of folks in the background were anxiously looking on to see what the eventual outcome would be.

So, without any further ado, let’s take a look into the event I call “God vs. the Magicians of Pharaoh!”

In this article it really isn’t necessary to take an in-depth, detailed look into Moses’ life except for certain things which we will examine as we go along. Suffice it to say, Moses’ life was divided in years of 40’s:

1) The first 40 years of Moses’ life were spent being raised as a Prince of Egypt.
2) The second 40 years of Moses’ life was spent as a humble shepherd taking care of his father-in-laws’ sheep.
3) The third 40 years of Moses’ life was spent as the “Deliverer of God’s Children” and “His representative”.

Moses lived for 120 years (Deut. 34:7) and he had quite the life indeed.
During the first 40 years of his life, Moses was raised as a Prince of Egypt. This happened because the daughter (Ex. 2:4) of Pharaoh (Seti I) had found the infant Moses, who was 3 months old at the time (Ex. 2:2), in a tiny, little ark-like boat floating among the bulrushes (similar to bamboo or reeds). At the same time, Moses’ sister was looking at what was transpiring and, when it appeared that everything was going to be fine, she came out of her hiding place and said unto the daughter of Pharaoh, “Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew Women, that she may nurse the child for thee?” And Pharaoh’s daughter replied “Go!” The little girl (Moses sister) went and got her mother (Moses’ mom) and brought her back to the daughter of Pharaoh. Now, whether or not Pharaoh’s daughter knew this was Moses’ mom is unknown. What is known is that Pharaoh’s daughter paid Moses’ mom to nurse him and, after a number of years had gone by, she brought Moses back to Pharaoh’s daughter. Once Moses had been returned to Pharaoh’s daughter she named him Moses (Ex. 2:7 – 10).

As a Prince of Egypt, Moses had it made! As a young child, if he wanted to go anywhere he would be carried in a litter, or rode in a chariot, or even rode his own horse. He would’ve had a full contingency of bodyguards since he was a Prince of Egypt because it would’ve been believed he was the son of the daughter of Pharaoh or, in other words, the Grandson of Pharaoh Seti I.

As he continued to grow up, Moses would’ve received the finest education possible. He would’ve been schooled in all the gods of the Egyptian pantheon and its occult religion, in art, engineering, mathematics, government (how to govern the Egyptian empire) and so on. He would’ve been wearing the finest linen clothes, silks, bedecked in gold and silver jewelry, scented in the costliest of perfumes and lived in the grandest estates.

Let’s face it! During the first 40 years of his life, Moses had it made. But all that was about to change! Let’s examine the scriptures to find out why.

In Ex. 2:11 – 15 it’s revealed that one day Moses saw one of his Hebrew brethren being terribly beaten by an Egyptian taskmaster. And when he saw that no one else was around, or looking on, Moses killed the taskmaster and buried (hid) him in the sand. On the following day, Moses sees two of Hebrew brethren physically fighting and, after having stopped the fighting, Moses told them that it was wrong for them to fight against each other in such a manner, and that he wanted to know why they were fighting. One of them replied (and to paraphrase it) “Who made you a judge over us? Are you going to kill us like you did that Egyptian yesterday?” Immediately Moses realized that if these two slaves had known what he had done, surely everyone would find out. And, now, Moses feared for his life. Allow me to explain why.

In Egyptian culture, back then, the law declared that if a Hebrew slave was killed, that was okay. Afterall, to the Egyptians, the Hebrew children were only property that they could treat in whatever fashion they wanted to. However, if an Egyptian was murdered, that was a crime unto death. The only exception to that rule would’ve been the reigning Pharaoh, and that was because he was supposed to have been the god over the world.

Moses, now, had to leave Egypt and everything else he knew behind. Eventually he ended up in the land of Midian after fleeing from the wrath of Seti I, Pharaoh of Egypt.

When Moses arrived in Midian he found a well and sat down by it. Considering he just crossed the desert, I’m sure he was thirty and drank from it. While there, the seven daughter of Reu-el (translated from the Hebrew which means, “Friend of God”) came to the well and filled up the water troughs to water the flocks by. Well, these shepherds came by and began to drive all the flocks away because they wanted to water their flocks first. In defense of the seven daughters of Reu-el the priest of Midian, Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flocks (Ex. 2:15 – 17).

*Note: Reu-el (the Priest of Midian) is Jethro, Moses’ future father-in-law (Ex. 2:21 and 3:1). I wanted to point this out now so there’d be no confusion down the road.

Once the flock had been watered, the ladies arrived back home, sooner than normal. Even their father was surprised at this and asked, “How is that ye are come so soon today?” The ladies explained that Moses saved them from the shepherds and even drew the water for them and watered their flock. Reu-el, a.k.a. Jethro told his daughters to fetch Moses so that they could sit down together and eat bread.

The long and short of this part of the life of Moses is: Moses agrees to stay with Jethro. Moses meets Zipporah; Zipporah meets Moses. He likes her; she likes him…It’s a Jewish Wedding! Moses and Zipporah have 2 children: Gershom (Ex. 2:21) and Eliezer (I Chr. 23:15). For the next 40 years of his life (until he’s 80 {Ex. 7:7}) Moses tends the flock of Jethro his father-in-law and was content. However, things were going to change for Moses in a way he never could’ve guessed at.

One day Moses is on the backsideof a mountain next to the Mountain of Horeb with the flock of Jethro. While he’s there, Moses suddenly sees a very strange sight. He sees a bush that is on fire but, it is not being consumed. Out of curiosity, Moses leaves the flock to discover why this bush is not being consumed. At some point, when Moses is about to get too close to the burning bush, God calls out to Moses by name, from the bush. He tells Moses (to paraphrase it) “Don’t come any closer. Take your shoes off for this place is holy ground.” (Ex. 3:1 4)”

At this point of the story, God identifies Himself and says, “I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob (Ex. 2:6).” In all honesty Ladies and Gentlemen, Brothers and Sisters, I would have hit the ground face first in a split second! This was no ordinary event! Think about this for a moment: you see a bush that’s on fire, the bush in not being consumed; the bush decides to have a conversation with you and, then, let’s you know that He is God. Wham! Just like that; face first onto the ground is where I would’ve been. Now, let’s get into the heart of the matter.

God tells Moses that He’s going to send him into Egypt and deliver His children from slavery. Out of humility, I believe, Moses asks “Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt (Ex. 3:10 – 11)?” God replies, “Certainly I will be with thee; (Ex. 3:12)…” He then adds, (to paraphrase it) “Once they (the children of Israel) are set free, you’re to come back here to this mountain and worship Me.” Moses then asks (to paraphrase it), “When I go to your children and tell them the God of your fathers sent me, they’re going to ask me what is your name. What should I tell them?” At this point, God is going to reveal a series of events Moses will be going through:

*required field

1) First, God tells Moses, “Tell them ‘I AM THAT I AM’” sent you.
2) You’re going to gather all the elders of Israel together and let them know you and I had a conversation and I am going to set them free from their bondage.
3) I AM going to bring you unto a land that is flowing with milk and honey (Canaan).
4) You and the elders will go to Pharaoh (Ramses II) and tell him “God has met with us and wants us to take a 3 day journey into the wilderness that we may sacrifice unto Him.
5) Pharaoh is going to say “No”.
6) I (God) am going to let him (Pharaoh) have it!
7) Pharaoh will then let you go and you’re going to take the spoils of Egypt with you (Ex. 3:14 – 22).

Up this point Moses appears to be fine with everything, then something appears to happen. Moses says (to paraphrase it), “They’re not going to believe me or anything that I tell them. They’re going to say ‘God didn’t appear to you.’” For part two click below.
