Among the most hair-brained and naïve notions to come out of President Obama and his State Department, and there have been dozens, is the latest: It is only by employing terrorists that we can end terror. What?! At his hastily assembled White House “Summit on Violent Extremism,” Obama’s central message was two-fold: We have to employ would be terrorists and we have to presume them not to be religious fanatics.

At a time when America sorely needs George Washington as Commander-in-Chief, it has a domestic version of Neville Chamberlain, a weak and irresolute chief executive who is more adept at taking selfies than he is in going to war. Obama prefers to obfuscate, hide from the American people the true character of its most ardent enemy and then proceed half-heartedly against that enemy, employing military means that are, by definition, incapable of achieving victory. In short, Obama’s retiring role threatens every American’s life. He is aiding and abetting terrorism by his inaction. He is doing so consciously, deliberately.

Obama seems to believe in a casual war where we fight to deter but not to win. He seems to think that a President does not need to command the attention of the American people, convince them of the character of its enemy and of the precise nature of its threat, and lead an all out military effort to exterminate that enemy. Rather, for Obama, we can dissuade religious zealots bent on killing all who deviate from their peculiar brand of radical Islam by coming to understand them better, giving them things like job opportunities, and waging a limited air campaign against certain of their facilities. Obama seems to think that war against an ardent foe can be a recreational past-time.

It is hard to believe that he does not appreciate the enormous risks he is now creating for the nation, for each American. By allowing ISIS to proliferate and operate in some 90 countries of the world and to seize large swaths of territory and create a unified and brutal theocratic dictatorship in parts of Iraq, Syria, Libya, the Sinai peninsula of Egypt, and in other parts of the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, Obama has virtually assured that there will be far more acts of terror against Americans worldwide. Through inaction, he has also aided and abetted their creation of a network designed to export terror to Europe and the United States, and he has permitted the rise of terror cells within the United States that will inevitably bring more acts of terror within the nation. Obama acts like a real life version of Hollywood’s Manchurian Candidate. We could not be worse served than if he were an agent of a foreign power.

His two-fold message at the White House Summit on Violent Extremism reveals just how out of touch Obama is with grave developments in the world and how disconnected he is with military strategy and command. The urgent need for a summit does exist, but not a love fest, a war council.

Obama is a hopeless cause, reforming him to leadership status is impossible. His ego and his lack of accountability to the electorate are old stories. We must therefore wait until his successor arrives. What, then, should the new Commander-in-Chief do? By then, ISIS will have expanded and increased its power, making decimation of legions committed to killing us more difficult, more costly, and more time consuming, but still definitely achievable.

The new President must level with the American people. He must explain the true character of ISIS and not, as has Obama, deny that character. He must explain that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is a jihadist terror organization engaged in a global campaign seeking to establish a one world government, a theocratic dictatorship, that will exterminate all religious and political entities and peoples other than its own. The group’s leader is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. He rules ISIS with a cabinet of religious zealot advisors who likewise view genocide as a given in the movement toward a worldwide caliphate. Al-Baghdadi believes he is the direct descendant of Muhammad. He believes all other Islamic leaders to be frauds, pretenders. He believes it is his divine mission to be the one global caliphate and restore original Wahhabi rule, recreating a state where he is a new global Salafist leader that will fulfill the Wahhabi objective of purifying Islamic society by annihilating all other societies.

The original Wahhabi project was an 18th century religious, political, and military movement of conquest and theocratic dictatorship led by Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab and ultimately adopted by the founding Saudi royal family. By the late 1790’s, the Wahhabi gained dominion over all of central Arabia, waged war in Karbala, Iraq, against the Shi’ites, and occupied Mecca and Medina in Western Arabia. The Wahhabi leaders were ruthlessly intolerant of even the slightest deviation from strict adherence to their religious edicts. They banned any and all religious acts and practices not in complete conformity with their narrow interpretation of Islam. They demanded adherence to what they described as the original teachings of Islam as prescribed in selectively emphasized interpretations of the Qur’an and Hadith (the traditions of Muhammad). They condemned any innovations in religious thought or deviations from their narrow interpretation. Their theology and law were largely based on the works of Ibn Taymiyah and Ahmad ibn Hanbal, which called for Qur’anic literalism and a global caliphate (global theocratic dictatorship) achieved by the violent purification of Islam (routing out, murdering, and eliminating of all competing Islamic sects) and elimination of all other faiths and peoples of other faiths. In short, the religious ideology of ISIS is one of global scope and absolute intolerance for any deviation from a monotheistic dictatorship prescribed by the Caliphate (in this instance al-Baghdadi).

Americans need to know that the leader of ISIS, al-Baghdadi, is a megalomaniac. He believes he is divinely commissioned asa direct descendant of Muhammad for the purpose of performing a global “purification,” an ethnic cleansing, mass genocide, eliminating every person and thing that deviates from his religious edicts and demands. In particular, he is committed to killing every person who does not pledge allegiance to him. He is committed to killing every person who does not adopt his narrow religious precepts and practices. He is committed to killing every person who does not abide by the severe limitations on personal, social, and political conduct that he prescribes. He is committed to killing every person who in any way dissents from his dominion, control, and rule. That includes all Muslims, Christians, Jews, believers of every other kind and non-believers. They are all scheduled for elimination by al-Baghdadi. Al-Baghdadi intends to create a worldwide caliphate (a global dictatorship in which he rules as the religious, political and military leader of the world). He does not recognize and, in fact, considers mortal enemies that must be destroyed every other “emirate, group, state, and organization” which he says will inevitably become “null by the expansion of the Khilafah’s (caliphate’s) authority and arrival of its troops to their areas.” For this reason, the rest of the Muslim world (indeed, even the radicals who comprise al Qaeda, think him a heretic who has perverted the Muslim faith).

Americans need to know that al-Baghdadi’s chosen methods for eliminating those who do not pledge allegiance to him and adhere to his edicts are beheadings, burnings, and genocide including every man, woman, and child without any grant of reprieve except upon confirmation that they have abandoned their prior lives and have sworn allegiance to him and have proven they will live in strict accord with his edicts.

Americans also need to know that al-Baghdadi’s brand of radical Islam is unique among Islamic faiths, is at odds with those faiths and all other faiths, and is violently predisposed to exterminate competing faiths and believers, including all other Muslim sects. The central point is that al-Baghdadi and ISIS are the world’s greatest enemies of freedom of religion and, as a consequence, Islamic peoples of the world reject the ISIS brand of Islam as strongly as the Christian peoples of the world. This is not a Christian versus Islamic struggle. This is a struggle between ISIS and the world, between ISIS and civilization, between ISIS and every government, and between ISIS and every sect and form of religion. We all have a direct and substantial stake in removing ISIS from this world.

Americans have a right to know this. It defines the character of this enemy. Lying to them by telling them that ISIS is not an Islamic group and refusing to explain the root motivations of ISIS members denies us the knowledge we need to appreciate just how dedicated, just how maniacal, and just how lethal this enemy is and why it is that every American everywhere is a target.

The next President must not only level with the American people about who al-Baghdadi is and what ISIS is but also about what the nation must do to prevent them from taking the lives of Americans and endangering America’s vital interests around the world. The truth is we must use every means at our disposal to eliminate this foe. Failing to do so invites ISIS growth which means more Americans’ lives lost. To start, we need to dedicate all available resources to finding and killing al-Baghdadi and his cabinet. We need to eliminate the head of this snake. Simultaneously, we need to rout out and destroy every member of the organization and to cut off every source of support for it. A half-hearted aerial bombing campaign, like the Obama one, is destined to fail from the start. We must wage a ferocious and unrelenting assault against ISIS, not simply softening targets but obliterating them. In the end, there is no way to avoid ground operations designed to find and destroy every last member of this horrific organization.

That means we will have to invest in, sustain, and deploy special forces and ground troops along with the latest and most sophisticated command, control, and communications to each theatre in which ISIS is operating and to each place where ISIS leaders, warriors, and supporters may be found. This is going to be a long, costly, and difficult slog but it has to occur if we are to protect our nation and ensure that level of stability in the world necessary for life, liberty, and prosperity.

Comparing Obama’s performance against the performance necessary to achieve victory over ISIS, the shortcomings are profound, threatening to the lives of every American, and inexcusably neglectful by any reasonable measure. Obama has advanced from the status of a failed President to the status of a failed President whose inaction and neglect now threaten the lives of every American. We may very well blame the loss of lives to ISIS and the expansion of the organization to 90 countries in no small measure upon the refusal of Obama to wage total war.

In his tortured logic, Obama conveys the outrageous position that ISIS terrorists are like us. For Obama, we are all ISIS, we are all possessed of a tendency to pervert and distort faith to condone the genocide of innocents.
