WANDERING SHEEP

His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; -Is. 56:10

I guess it is time we start calling Glenn Beck “Reverend.” Who would have ever believed that the second largest gathering of Christians in the history of Washington DC would be initiated by a Mormon talk-show host? The Promise Keepers “Stand in the Gap” event of 1997 was the only thing that could top what Beck pulled off.

Before I get too deep into my thoughts let me lament the lost opportunity of The Promise Keepers.

It was the single greatest gathering of Christian men in the history of America. Nearly two million men traveled to DC in 1997. It was the apex of that organization. From that point on, PK has been on a downward slide.

I love Coach McCartney and his vision of Godly men and the impact that they could have on this nation. Just like Glenn Beck, Coach Mac tapped into a pulsating artery in the American blood system. I have often wondered where America would be today if PK had urged Christian men to live out a more masculine form of Christianity.

Their focus was on family issues, loving your wife, raising your children, being accountable to other men, all of which are noble and well intentioned. But, for the most part, PK focused on the soft “feminized” side of Christianity…relationships. Can you imagine the impact if PK had focused the men on their responsibility to their communities and the battle for truth, justice, and the American way? Thirteen years ago Christian men answered a wake-up call.

But PK didn’t want to get political…they wouldn’t even take a position on abortion, for heaven’s sake. The seeker sensitive leadership that seized control of PK was determined not to offend.

Rather than pointing out that the culture was the playing field where the battle for the hearts of men was played out, PK focused their followers on helping their wives’ in the kitchen. Today, the kitchen is on fire and no one knows what to do about it.

Two million men showed up in Washington DC in 1997…don’t you wonder where they are today?

The “Restoring Honor” event that Glen Beck just pulled off in Washington is a tremendous indictment on America’s pastors. Twice in the last 20 years, a Spiritual revival has been ignited in the heartland of America. Once by a football coach and the other by a talk show host. In both cases the last one’s to “get it” were the shepherds.

For the love of God, where are America’s pastors?

I appreciate Glenn Beck. I wonder where we would be today, politically, where it not for him. As I watched the hundreds of thousands descend on DC last weekend I couldn’t help but wonder if our pastors are blind. Did they pan the crowd to see if any of their sheep had made the trip?

Over 500 thousand in attendance

I believe that God is using Beck to awaken a “form of godliness” in the American culture. But Glenn Beck is a Mormon.

I will leave the discussion of Beck’s message of an “all-inclusive God” up to more studious men than I, but my Christianity teaches Jesus alone…not the book of Mormon…not the Koran… “I am THE way, THE Truth, THE life, no one comes to the Father but by me”...is they only answer to our problems.

Please don’t write me about Glenn Beck and his Mormonism. That is not what this commentary is about. This commentary is about America’s pastors and how irrelevant the Christianity that they preach has become.

America is filled with wandering sheep…sheep without shepherds, led by dumb dogs…afraid to bark.

I have had the opportunity to speak at many local Tea Parties. I have been telling anyone who would listen that the answers to America’s problems are spiritual…moral, and that the Tea Parties are comprised of wandering sheep who are looking for a shepherd.

Unfortunately, the shepherds are all hiding inside their stained glassed fortresses, safely protected from the battle, cooing that “religion and politics don’t mix.” All the while, the sheep that they are supposed to be “leading out” are wandering in search of a leader.

Watch this video of a presentation that I made at a recent Tea Party. Listen to the applause and the cheers as I talk about moral issues and a return to our Christian culture. The values that Christianity professes are what the Tea Party folks want taught to their children. They sense that somehow they have lost their country and the want to reclaim it so that they can pass America, and her values, to their grand-children.

But the cowardly pastors are nowhere to be found. Go to any local Tea Party and ask for a show of hands. Rarely will you find a pastor in attendance. Most of them are probably meeting with their local ecumenical group to see how they can compromise the Truth of the Gospel right out of existence.

Meanwhile, the sheep are wandering, chewing on the “political gospel”, trusting in Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck to deliver them from the shackles of the Obama administration. Glenn Beck and his “gospel of the Constitution” gives them more hope for the problems that face America than anything they hear coming from the cowardly, sissy-men spewing forth from their pulpit.

They have stopped going to church, many of the Tea Party folks, or else they go out of duty. But nearly all, if given the opportunity, will wax eloquent about the lack of “hard preaching” that they hear in their local churches. Sick of being dumbed down, or told that they must not bring their political views into the church, they seek nourishment for their troubled soul elsewhere. And after awhile, the food that they are receiving from Beck and his TV guests satisfies their hunger, and provides an outlet in which to engage in the battle.

America is in the condition she is in, not because of the politicians, but because of the pastors.

This nation is ripe for revival. Jesus told us it would be so. “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.”

As I watched the Glenn Beck phenomenon unfold I wondered how many pastors recognized the Spiritual hunger in this nation. There is a famine for the word and the sheep are chewing on anything that looks appetizing.

“But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.” -Mathew 9:37

Where are his workers?

Pastors don’t want to lead the sheep, and they aren’t interested in following them. It seems to me that they only want to tame them.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, pastor, but the sheep are out of the pen. You have not done your job.

Glenn Beck is rounding them up for you.
