Discovering America’s Christian Heritage

Part 25 The Responsibilities of the Free Part 2

Foundation Scripture:

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Why are our leaders of such low character? It is because our education system has left the proven foundation of sound education. We no longer teach religion, morality or knowledge. Christianity has been kicked out of the schools and mocked in the colleges and universities. Without religion there can be no foundation for morals. The knowledge that is being taught lacks the essentials to give the student a decent start in the world. College students today wouldn’t be able to pass an 8th grade final exam from the turn of the century. Secularization of education has reduced the success rate of our public schools exponentially. It is our responsiblity to see to it that the system remains effectual.

Noah Webster stated concerning education: “The education of youth should be watched with the most scrupulous attention. It is much easier to introduce and establish an effectual system than to correct by penal statues the ill effects of a bad system. The education of youth lays the foundations on which both law and gospel rest for success.” When we allowed prayer to be removed and the reading of the Bible to be removed we allowed the destruction of the most effectual education system to begin. The present system imparts mere academic knowledge and that is not the basis of a sound educational system. We have let our responsibilities slide.

I will admit that this foundation was removed when most of us were still in school and had no means of stopping it, but we are now in a position of authority and knowledge and we must act to bring the foundations our Founding Fathers laid back into all areas of this nation. Are we going to be slack in our duties? When Israel entered the promise land one tribe was not as aggressive as the rest in obtaining their inheritance. Joshua confronted them about it: Joshua 18:3 “And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, How long are ye slack to go to possess the land, which the LORD God of your fathers hath given you?” When are we going to take back what God has given us and what we let slip through our fingers? In 1803 Rev. Matthias Burnet declared: “Finally, ye, whose high perogative it is to invest with office and authority or to withhold them and in whose power it is to save or destroy your country, consider well the important trust which God has put into your hands. To God and posterity you are accountable for them. Let not your children have reason to curse you for giving up those rights and prostrating those institutions which your fathers delivered to you.” We have a slightly different mandate and that is to get back what was delivered to our parents and what they let slip by them.

Some of us have not voted because the candidates were not ‘perfect’. That is a dereliction of duty. No candidate will be perfect. By setting on the sidelines we have allowed ungodly men and women to be in authority over us. Some of us could run for political office but for one reason or another won’t. It is the responsibility of the church to put godly men and women in office. Psalms 33:12 states “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD;” How will we maintain a nation who God is Lord if we don’t have godly men and women in authority that will keep our nation heading in the right direction?

Our Founders realized that God had given them a great opportunity to exalt Him by being great stewards of the blessings given them; family, civil, religious and business. They realized that they were to do something with what He had given them. Just like the parable of the talents, the one servant that did nothing was called evil. If we do nothing with what He has given us, we are no better. If we do not try to regain what he gave our Founding Fathers, we will be worse than the one that did nothing. An associate of mine explained our responsibilities in this area this way. As the servants did not ask for the responsibility of the talents, neither did we ask for the government that He gave us. And as He expected the servants to increase what they had, we too are expected to increase what He has given us. We may be faithful with our tithes and offerings, and faithful with our duties to our families, but we must be faithful with the government that He has given us as well. If we let it dissolve into a socialistic quagmire, we will be held accountable for that.

I grew up enjoying the freedoms that many today do not know. Many of the changes that have occurred in America’s society occurred in the last 50 years. I will not stand by and turn a nation over to my children that is worse than it was before I became responsible for it, without doing ALL I can do to bring it back to what our Founders established 234 years ago. I want to leave this world better than what I found it, if the Lord tarries. I will not give my children something that isn’t as good as when I got it.

We have not taken the responsibility of voting to heart. We have voted our pocketbook for too many years instead of righteousness or we have voted party. Charles Finney stated: “The time has come that Christians must vote for honest men and take consistent ground in politics. Christians have been exceedingly guilty in this manner, but the time has come when the Christians must act differently. Christians seem to act like they think God does not see what they do in politics, but I tell you He does see it. He will bless or curse this nation according to the course Christians take in politics.” It doesn’t matter the party, it is the principles the candidate stands for that are important.

In this last presidential election you could walk through any church parking lot on any Sunday and see bumper stickers for the current president even though he held to no Biblical principles. He was for abortion on demand, he even voted for infanticide three times, he was for homosexual marriage with a track record to prove these positions, yet Christians still voted for him. We can no longer take these positions and still expect God to bless our nation. Neither candidate for president was perfect, but one did believe that life began at conception and that homosexual marriage was wrong. Proverbs 29:2 “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” If we have wicked people in authority over us it is because we put them there. If we have righteous people in authority over us it is because we put them there. We have no one to blame but ourselves for the men and women that rule over us. In the last election only 25% of evangelicals voted. Had 50% voted we may not have the president that we have today. We would not be seeing the exponential increase in abortions that we are seeing today. The American taxpayer would not be paying for abortions all over the world like we are today. We would not be seeing the drastic rise in teen age pregnancies that we are seeing today.

Not having information on your candidates is a poor excuse in the age of the internet. Incumbents have all of their voting records and statements logged at the Library of Congress. New candidates require a little more research but that information is easily attainable. There is no excuse for not being informed except for apathy. Passive Christianity will not turn this nation around.

2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” We can repent for not being obedient to His Word and call upon Him to heal our nation and He will. But it will take action on our part. Are you willing to take that step? Are you willing to take a stand for what it right and godly? Are you willing to take your nation back?
