MARRIAGE IS 'THE' ISSUE

For more than 50 years marriage has been under attack in America! Yet Americans in their heart appreciate the goodness of marriage no matter what their personal circumstances. There is something in the soul that draws us to the possibility of two individuals becoming one flesh. It is etched in our minds and upon our hearts. It is in our foundational laws. We all seek and strive for marriage regardless of our bad experiences with love. Marriage works for one reason only, God created it that way.

Marriage is at the core of all successful societies. The election on November 2, 2004 proved this when citizens in 11 states out of 11 overwhelmingly passed state constitutional marriage amendments. This issue alone probably saved George W, Bush's presidency as exit polls across the nation revealed that moral values were the top issue in the final decision for electing a president.

The polls showed that people believed that President Bush is far more moral than Senator Kerry. Why? Neither candidate truly put forth a Christian worldview on marriage, human sexuality and other moral issues. George Bush, on CNN's Larry King Live, said, "civil unions" are okay with him if states enact them, and that everybody should be allowed to follow his or her sexual "orientation." Senator Kerry, for his part, is an outspoken supporter of "gay" rights.

However, Bush did convince evangelical Christians and many others that the Federal Marriage Amendment was a pretty good idea. I am not writing this article to debate the pros or cons of defining marriage in the US Constitution. What I am expressing is that defending marriage, as God has defined it, is the most winnable argument in the political landscape today. THE issue brings voters out to the polls in massive numbers. God has given us an opportunity like no other in recent years and Christians, the Church and pastors need to awaken to His divine appointment. The time has come for the American Church to become the church of salt and light.

We all grew up believing that "happily ever after" was what we want and desire in our lives. Human beings have a deep yearning to find that special someone and grow old together. It is because man and woman by themselves are incomplete. God spells this out for us in Genesis 2:18, "The Lord God said, 'It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.'" When God did this, Adam instantly recognized the beauty and significance of woman. Genesis 2:23, "the man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman' for she was taken out of man.''

God completed the process by establishing marriage as the only institution before man fell from innocence. Genesis 2:24, "for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh." Jesus furthered this concept by stating, Mark 10:8-9, "So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate." No matter how hard the enemies of God try to destroy marriage, God has, "written the law on their hearts," and we are "without excuse" because these truths are self evident.

We can see this reflected in American jurisprudence, in the common law terms, "tenants in common" or "tenants of the entirety." This means the law views husband and wife as one. James Wilson in 1792 writing of the Natural Rights of Individuals penned, "The most important consequence of marriage is, that the husband and the wife become in law only one person... Upon this principle of union, almost all the other legal consequences of marriage depend. This principle, sublime and refined, deserves to be viewed and examined on every side." America has a long history of already reinforcing God's law on marriage and family.

Americans instinctively know that marriage is good for society and are willing to vote candidates in and out of office based largely on this issue. Rush Limbaugh disagrees with this statement because Christians have not fully explained the authority of marriage in God's word. Christians need to realize their position of strength when promoting God's precious design for marriage and family. We need to be bold and straight forward as to what works and marriage works when following the Designer's plan.

"Civil Unions" do not work, and actually undermine marriage. "Domestic Partner" benefits do the same thing. Anything outside the bounds of God's design has proven over human history to destroy rather than build society and community. Our best guess is not even close to God's wonderful design.

At Bush's acceptance speech on November 3, 2004, the vice-president's family was introduced on stage. Mr. Cheney's lesbian daughter appeared with her homosexual partner. While we understand the love the Cheney's have for their daughter, this is not the message that God wants us to promote. This is the message that homosexual activists promote by equating same-sex partners are a family too! Are we willing as Christians to confront the President and his staff to teach them the difference between God's design for human sexuality and what is being tolerated in the name of diversity?

"Diversity divides, Jesus heals" must be our message!

Let us thank God for the opportunity He has given to us. Marriage is special because God created it for us. We can be encouraged by Him in spreading the good news that marriage is worth fighting for and passing onto the next generation to enjoy the bond that helps us live in a civil and Godly society. I thank God for my wife and children and the institution He gave us to live within so we can enjoy liberty while pursuing happiness.

Marriage is THE issue, no exceptions!
