DRUNKS ARE NOT FUNNY

There was a short article posted recently on WorldNetDaily.com written by Joe Kovacs, author of the book Shocked By The Bible, that includes a YouTube video of an alleged drunk trying to buy beer at a convenience store. The footage, originally titled “Drunkest Guy Ever,” was apparently taken by the store’s surveillance camera and has been viewed online over 400,000 times. According to the WND report titled, 'Drunkest man ever' now silent sensation, someone put the video to music and re-titled it “Larry Goes to the Market.”

It shows an inebriated man stumbling up and down the aisles of the store searching for more to drink; but, due to his extreme drunken state, is unable to make it to the register with the beer he found in the refrigerated section – eventually ending up on the floor, incapable of even getting up.

The WND report began this way:

“Hilarious surveillance video showing an intoxicated man looking to buy more beer at a convenience store is getting a second life now that it's been re-edited into a silent-movie-style clip.”

Having struggled myself with alcohol in years past and losing a parent to it, I didn’t find the video to be “hilarious” at all. And, considering God’s Word on the matter, Christians would do well to not laugh at another’s sin and revel in their misery and bondage – especially those who themselves have been delivered from it.

Proverbs 23:21 says: “For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.”

The Apostle Paul goes even further explaining that drunks have no place in the kingdom of God:

“Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” – Galatians 5:21

Shall we now laugh and be collectively entertained by another’s tragic journey to hell?

I wonder if those whose families have been destroyed by alcohol think the YouTube video is hilarious? And what about all the folks who have been abused by drunks – and those who have been awakened in the middle of the night to find out that someone they loved was in jail, in a hospital or in a morgue because of an alcohol-related incident? And how about those who lost someone to suicide because of alcohol? I wonder if they laughed at the video?

And let’s not forget those who lie awake at night knowing that someone dear to them is begging for cash on the street with which to buy another bottle or is passed out in a back alley somewhere covered in vomit, urine and worse after drinking themselves into a blackout.

And what about those who have spent their life savings repeatedly paying bail bondsmen, fines, court costs, attorneys and rehab centers for friends and loved ones addicted to alcohol? I wonder if they’re chuckling over the YouTube clip?

On the same day I found the WND story, I read the latest column by it’s founder, editor and CEO, Joseph Farah, who took to task Phyllis Schlafly’s son, Andy Schlafly, for his “Conservative Bible Project” – something he called: “an effort to rewrite the Bible to the tastes of conservatives online, Wikipedia-style.”

Mr. Farah went on to proclaim: “Either the Bible is the Word of God, or it's not” and concluded with: “A plague on the houses of anyone and everyone who would tamper so frivolously with God's Word.”

I couldn’t agree more.

But, what are we doing with God’s Word when we turn drunkenness into a form of Christian/Conservative amusement?

How can we legitimately criticize liberals and others in Hollywood for glamorizing filth and debauchery – for seducing viewers into being entertained by murder, mayhem, lying, thievery, deceit, drugs, drunkenness, adultery, fornication and sodomy when we do the same ourselves?

Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross for sins such as these. Shall we now join the reprobates and belly laugh at rebellion with all our Christian conservative friends and family members before the throne of Almighty God?

Considering the terrible price that was paid on Calvary’s cross for sin, we might want to reconsider, because I don’t think God is laughing.

Show me a video of “Larry” on YouTube repenting of his sin, receiving the Lord Jesus, being healed and delivered from his addictions and baptized into the Body of Christ and then I will celebrate with joy and laughter – but not until then.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” – James 4:7-10
