ORWELL’S PIGS

The media in America, which is controlled by just six corporations, has been in the process of radical transformation during the last several years. There is no longer even the pretense of ideological diversity. It is Big Brother and the Ministry of Truth, 24/7 on just about every television program and most of radio, with few exceptions. Although the media has been in the business of lying to the America people from its inception, it now becomes one big lie, all day long. Senator Ted Cruz’s twenty one hour filibuster on the Senate floor provided one of those rare glimpses of truth on CSPAN because it was live, unedited, and uninterrupted.

Senator Cruz actually explained in simple and understandable terms the game that Republicans, Democrats, and the media have been playing for decades. The most explosive revelation came from Cruz’s willingness to shine the light of day on the dirty little game that the Republicans play with the help of the media and what some people perceive as the conservative media. It is not what Cruz said about Obamacare which was so revealing, it was what he said about the Republican Party! Cruz, unlike the media which avoids a single coherent thought at all costs, explained how the Republicans work in collusion with the Democrats by voting no and voting yes on all kinds of bills that will not help the American people, but will simply allow them to keep up the masquerade that they are actually doing something to help our nation. What Cruz did, which is what the media never does and that includes a large percentage so-called conservative media, is to communicate the truth of what is really happening in simple terms.

Collectively, the mass media is in the business of what George Orwell, author of the 1984, depicted in his novel as “The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism, or Doublethink.”

The key word is “blackwhite.” Like so many Newspeak words, this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary. This demands a continuous alteration of the past, made possible by the system of thought which really embraces all the rest, and which is known in Newspeak as doublethink. Doublethink is basically the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.

1984 — Part II, Chapter IX — The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism

Our contemporary media is Orwellian in every sense of the word. The name of the game is to bombard the mind with visual images and words that appear to have meaning, riding on a steady stream of “Alpha Waves,” but, in reality, have no meaning.

The goal is to perpetuate the illusion of meaning with a stroboscopic bombardment of images, attractive men and women communicating what appears to be a rational discussion. The human mind is caught off imbalance and loses equilibrium because, on one level, the watching and listening audience is able to discern that core content is irrational, like “fried ice cream.” On the other hand, another part of the brain lets go and enjoys the ride into a kind of euphoric, mindless oblivion.

In 1984, George Orwell described a pyramid system of control. In his “Oceanian” society Big Brother is at the very top of the pyramid and the inner party below him. The Orwell shows that below the inner party is the outer party and at the base of the pyramid are the great mass of “Proles.” In our society, the media must continually broadcast the illusion and every media personality must be willing to play the game of deceit, which is ultimately betrayal.

George Orwell wrote another book entitled, Animal Farm. There was a pig named, “Squealer,” who is the Minister of Propaganda. I thought I saw him on a cable show late last night.
