The neo-Stalinists and Hugo Chavez wannabes of the American Left—in a word, Democrats—are always looking for new ways to take away our freedom. They hunt Lady Liberty like Captain Ahab hunted the white whale.

Two of their latest efforts surfaced in the news last week.

In Congress, a pair of Democrats, Sen. Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, are pushing a bill, S.2219, that would authorize a government agency to monitor all “telecommunications” for “hate speech” that might could, maybe, just possibly inspire violent crimes motivated by “hate”—except, of course, for games of “knockout.” Democrats really hate hate, and they’ll destroy anyone who hates. Unless they hate those whom Democrats hate.

By “telecommunications” they mean any and all forms of communication more sophisticated than passing notes or muttering out of the corner of your mouth to the woman behind you on the checkout line. But they do want to monitor radio and TV broadcasts, Internet websites and blogs, Facebook pages, “commercial mobile services, and other electronic media”—meaning our email messages and cell phone conversations—for “hate speech.”

And what is “hate speech”? Why, whatever the feds say it is, on any given day. But of course we already know from experience that “hate speech” is anything we write or say that dissents from the government’s vigorous program of promoting homosexuality, amnesty for illegal aliens, and racial favoritism. “Hate speech” also encompasses any opposition to or criticism of the current occupier of the White House, his performance, or his policies.

Just for laughs, they throw in some malarkey about all their actions and recommendations being “consistent with the First Amendment.” All they know about the First Amendment is an insatiable desire to see it stuffed and mounted in the Oval Office as the great trophy of their freedom hunt.

Meanwhile, outside Washington, the Southern Poverty Lie Center—er, “Law Center”—is demanding that Amazon.com and PayPal blacklist any organization listed by the Lie Center as a “hate group.” At last count there were 91 of these, including Christian ministries and churches, and mainstream pro-family organizations like the American Family Association. Many of you have joined or contributed money to these “hate groups.” That makes you a “hater,” and the Lie Center thinks you should be stepped on.

They want PayPal to make it impossible for you to send your small contributions to these groups, and they want Amazon to make it impossible for them to sell books or other products to you via the Internet. You’d better hurry up and buy what you want to read, before the Lie Center successfully forbids it to you.

What is “hate,” according to the SPLC? It’s any expressed adherence to Biblical Christianity, any attachment to American tradition, any divergence from their comprehensive menu of neo-Marxist tripe. You mustn’t be allowed to voice such opinions anymore. If they could get inside their head and stop you from thinking such thoughts, they’d do it. To insist that marriage consists only of a man and a woman is, to them, the same as plotting to bring back slavery.

Gee, I hate these people. I guess that ought to get me banned from having any but the most marginal livelihood. I should have said, gee, I hate Christians! No penalty for that.

The Left is for radically transforming America into a country in which any opinion but theirs is systematically repressed. They call that “diversity.” To root out and abolish any opinion but their own, they call “tolerance.” To impoverish and criminalize anyone who dares to differ with them, they call “justice.”

You have to learn to understand their language.

Did you ever think you’d see the day when a major political party, with millions of members, controlling the White House, the whole executive branch, the Senate, and most of the court system, would survive and thrive on a program of advocating the abolition of our liberties? Did you ever think you’d see the day when such a bill as S.2219 could be brought before the Congress of the United States, and not be denounced as open villainy?

This is sin, a flagrant abuse of civil institutions ordained by God to protect us from evildoers. Now the civil magistrate has become the evildoer. It is a spiritual sickness that has become the dominate fact of our nation’s political life.

Pray that the Lord, who ordained these institutions for our good, will show us how to make our country well again.
