INFECTIOUS DISEASE POLICY IS BASED ON THE WRONG GERM THEORY
Carolyn Dean, MD, ND and
Some years later, after WWI, and right after the Flexner Report was published, which led to homeopathic schools (along with all the other non-allopathic schools) being closed by political pressure being exerted on their benefactors, homeopathy experienced its greatest and most public triumph in the area of addressing epidemics. Millions of people around the world were dying of influenza. In Chicago, where the great mail order houses were located, Montgomery Ward & Company had a medical clinic for its 8,000 employees and their families staffed by homeopathic physicians. This large cluster of people experienced one lone death instead of the hundreds experienced by Marshall Field and Sears Roebuck. One homeopath practicing at the time later wrote that the allopaths lost 20 to 40% of their patients while homeopaths suffered losses of only 5 to 6% or less.
Similarly, in New York City, homeopath Royal Copeland, the city’s Commissioner of Health, initiated public policies that resulted in the city experiencing the lowest death rate per capita in the US. Copeland also noted that the actual deaths experienced were from pneumonia, a complication from the flu, due to cold buildings. As a result, he changed the Sanitary Code to require landlords to keep heat in buildings no lower than 68 degrees. Another interesting detail was that the East Side with a large Jewish population, where the overcrowding was greatest, had a lower death rate among babies than the wealthiest homes in the city. He claimed it was because Jewish mothers were the best mothers in the world. We say it must have been the chicken soup, a nutritionally rich food product that usually included several herbs of medicinal value.
Australian scientist, Viera Scheibner told Elissa some years ago that in her massive research on epidemics, homeopathic successes stood out everywhere. Scheibner, who testified in Congress in 1999, during hearings on the problems with Hepatitis B vaccine, stated that there is ample evidence in the public record and in published medical journals all over the world, “that the largest epidemics occurred in the most highly vaccinated populations, while those who were unvaccinated, did not have the same epidemics.” Scheibner and her late husband came to study the effects of vaccinations on children when they established a computer system to chart the breathing patterns of small children while they slept to determine the cause of crib death. What Scheibner discovered is that all children evidenced major stress after being vaccinated and those at risk for crib death evidenced the most stress.
Scheibner’s exhaustive research into the actual performance of vaccinations from published records is covered in her book, “Vaccination - 100 Years of Orthodox Research shows that Vaccines Represent a Medical Assault on the Immune System.” In the introduction of her book, Scheibner states:
Scheibner’s book should be required reading for every American as well as every public official involved with crafting health policies and laws.
As a naturopath, I must also tell the miraculous story of the founder of naturopathy, Benedict Lust, a German immigrant, who had contracted a very serious case of TB right after he came to America. At the time, TB was so rampant that it was called the White Plague and everyone feared it. Lust went back to Germany to die but fell into the hands of Father Sebastian Kneipp an advocate of “the water cure” to treat the sick. Father Kneipp also believed in teaching people how to support their health by understanding the “balance between work and leisure, stress and relaxation and the harmony between the mental, emotional, physical, social, and ecological planes.” Lust was completely cured by these methods and returned to America, with Kneipp’s blessings, to spread the teachings of natural medicine.
Fear is often used to convince skeptical people of the virtues of vaccination. Recent memories of the polio epidemics of the 1940s and early 50s often paralyze honest discussions about the dangers of compulsory vaccination laws and what we should do about them. We have been so traumatized by memories of children in iron lungs and how our moms were afraid to let us go into crowds, go swimming in public places during the hot summer and the like, we forget that not all medical practitioners consider vaccination the holy grail of medicine. Only those of us who have a direct connection with success outside of modern medicine seem to eagerly promote such public discussion.
In the chiropractic community, several of Elissa’s personal chiropractors have stories about themselves or immediate family members who were stricken with the paralyzing effects of polio only to be completely healed within two weeks by simply utilizing natural cures available to the average chiropractor. Stories of successful polio treatment are common discussion at chiropractic conventions among the older practitioners.
According to naturopath, Eleanor McBean, author of the “Poisoned Needle – Suppressed Facts About Vaccination” – a survey taken in 1946 regarding polio recovery rates of various schools of medical thought came out with some astounding information. Under chiropractors using a specific treatment had a 91%-100% recovery, a specific Hygienic treatment resulted in a 97% to 100% recovery, Nurse Elizabeth Kenny could produce a 72% recovery, 35% would recover under no professional care, and 17% would recover under what we would call modern medical care.
Meanwhile, in the 1950s, homeopaths in Buenos Aires, where polio was epidemic, were distributing thousands of doses of a homeopathic remedy to the public and thanks to that action, not a single case of polio was reported among those who received it. A similar, worldwide study among 50,000 patients receiving the same remedy resulted in only one non-paralytic case.
However, newspaper headlines here and abroad covered with great fanfare the new Salk polio vaccine, which was being rolled out as a triumph of modern medicine. In less than two weeks, however, headlines reported that the Salk vaccine had turned into a disaster. Of the first group of children to receive this new magic bullet, the great shield against the scourge of polio, 40,000 children developed a mild form of polio, 164 suffered permanent paralysis, ten died and countless others who had contact with inoculated children fell ill with polio. It was believed that the problem was that the formaldehyde in the vaccine had not sufficiently killed the live virus. May we repeat -it was the FORMALDEHYDE that did it!
Had enough? While we are not advocating the complete dismantling of the vaccination medical machine, what we are advocating is honest and openly-examined policy so every American can decide how he or she wants to deal with infectious diseases. If after examining all the angles, you decide to be vaccinated, we say, “go for it”. Informed Choice is the watchword of health freedom and with honest health policy as well! If you believe America needs an honest infectious disease policy, here are some ideas for you to consider.
What You Can Do to Change Public Policy
Keep in mind that in the Jacobson vs. Massachusetts Supreme Court decision in 1905, the court ruled that states had the police power to force people to be vaccinated. However, and this is a big “however”, the court also stated that it is up to the people of the state to decide what laws would or would not be enacted and it is not up to the courts to decide the medical merit of them. In short, whatever the people commonly believe is right, is the way the laws should be written and enforced.
At the State Level
Make sure your state has good exemption laws and they are carried out in good faith. All states have medical exemptions – some even allow chiropractors and other non-MDs to sign exemptions. Most states have religious exemptions – make sure yours does and that whatever religion you may belong to does not have to be listed if you want to decline on religious grounds. Some states only allow some sects to decline on religious grounds. Make sure your state has a philosophical exemption. About half of the states have one. Make sure that you don’t have to write an essay to decline on philosophical grounds. You should be able to simply say “I don’t believe in vaccinations” and be done with it.
Make sure that exemption forms and citations of the law are readily available upon request. To encourage full compliance, one trick often played on parents is for school officials and others to pretend not to know about exemptions. Another trick is to provide parents with only that portion of the law that covers the mandate but not the legal right to decline.
Through the Freedom of Information Act of your state attempt to get the names of the members of the committee that decides vaccination policy in your state. Chances are you will not get that information. In that case, get a written statement from whoever declines your request to that effect and present it to both your state senator and house member with a note explaining that as a taxpayer you want to know who the people are who make decisions about vaccination mandates. You might also ask them to find out who the CDC employee is who is part of the infectious disease policy-making process.
What you are ultimately working for is to make sure the process of formulating state policy is public and transparent. Once that is done, it is important to make sure that non-MDs who do know about other ways of treating infectious diseases are appointed to infectious disease advisory committees so that these other practitioners can help your state health department develop multi-medical model policies for those who opt not to be vaccinated.
If you decide to avoid vaccinations, be sure you have a competent practitioner to consult regarding how to handle infectious diseases should you or members of your family end up sick. [Read]
At the Federal Level
Make friends with both your US senator and house member (and their health legislative aides) and provide them with documents (including the two referenced links below) regarding problems with current infectious disease policy. [Read] [Read]
Ask that a full public investigation regarding the CDC and the IOM be conducted to show who is framing infectious disease policy and what their possible conflict of interests may be. Be sure to request that the public be fully informed about what entities are funding the activities of these two agencies.
Be sure to mention that Switzerland has no mandatory vaccination laws and that, as a country, it’s health system recognizes the validity of all schools of thought on medical and health matters. You might also mention that Swiss residents are required to purchase their own medical insurance policies and that these policies cover services of all schools of thought. In addition, be sure to mention that the Swiss health care system is considered the best in the world and manages to deliver it at half the cost of the American system.
