For many people who believe we should have medical choice, particularly in the area of cancer prevention and treatment, Labor Day Weekend has become synonymous with attending the Annual Cancer Control Society Convention in San Diego. This years shindig includes lectures on how to prevent and control cancer through nutrition, non-toxic cancer therapies such as Laetrile, Gerson, Hoxsey, Koch, enzymes and the like presented by MDs, clinical researchers, nutritionists, and authors. This convention is open to the public and also includes a special tour of nine Mexican cancer clinics offering all manner of cancer treatments that establishment cancer experts dont want you to know about.

The irony of this annual trek, the 33rd such event, is that while establishment cancer industry leaders have made a career out of calling the therapies highlighted at these Cancer Control Society gatherings disparaging names like unproven, questionable and dubious, they also condemn practitioners of these same therapies as being too sympathetic and too willing to listen to their patients than do their overscheduled establishment counterparts who work in busy managed-care and/or oncology centers. Also on the laundry list of insulting remarks is the accusation that practitioners offering these non-establishment therapies are unethically praying on the fears and desperation of sick patients and seducing them away from valid treatments.

To seasoned health freedom activists, this barrage of insults is nothing more than a way for Cancer Incorporated to avoid talking about the failure of their industry to actually cure cancer, due, in part, to its out-and-out prejudice against any therapy that doesnt burn, cut or poison, and, most of all, cant be patented.

For the record, long before President Nixon declared his War on Cancer, Congressional investigators found that the persecution of well-known cancer specialist and naturopath, Dr. Harry Hoxsey, and his herbal formula, was a weird conglomeration of corrupt motives, intrigue, selfishness, jealousy, obstructionism, and conspiracy. In the Congressional Record report on this situation (August 3, 1953), it is noted that the co-conspirators of Hoxseys persecution were none other than the US Surgeon General, the Council of the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the AMA.

I go into some detail in my book, Death by Modern Medicine, about the Hoxsey affair as well as similar persecution a decade later of Dr. Andrew Ivy, who had actually served as executive director of the National Advisory Cancer Council, which back then advised the US Public Health Service on where to spend money on cancer research. Dr. Ivys downfall was that he wanted to organize the creation of a series of treatment centers where non-toxic therapies could be tried on terminal cancer patients.

Like Hoxsey, Dr. Ivy was viciously attacked and the public defense of Ivy was so loud that Senator Paul Douglas personally investigated the situation and entered the evidence into the Congressional Record on December 6, 1963. Sen. Douglas found that the AMA, the National Cancer Institute, the FDA and others in the Department of Health and Human Services had used secret evaluation committees and erroneous scientific documentation, as well as innuendoes and threats of criminal charges to destroy the reputation of Dr. Ivy and Krebiozen, the drug Ivy wanted tested that ultimately was never marketed.

Upon this background of corruption and systematic condemnation of non-toxic and natural therapies, President Nixon declared the War on Cancer in 1971. Since then, we taxpayers and others have sunk $200 billion dollars into cancer research, an average of $14.4 billion each year. There is very little accounting for what happened to all this money but what we do know is very little has been gained.

In Death by Modern Medicine I reviewed an exhaustive report from the March 9, 2004, issue of Fortune Magazine, entitled, Why Were losing the War on Cancer. It seems that the much-touted improvement in the longevity of cancer patients can be attributed to lifestyle changes and that the so-called improvement in survival rates is basically adding a few months, not years, to ones life.

In real terms, the percentage of Americans dying from cancer, based on age-adjusted figures, is about the same as it was in 1971 AND as it was in 1950! Meanwhile deaths from heart disease have been cut by 59 percent and strokes by 69 percent during this same period of time.

In any other business and make no mistake, cancer is a business. In any other business such failure to produce any hint of success would be struck down immediately. If medicine were a publicly traded company where the saving of lives instead of the dollars earned were the bottom line we would have a very different set of criteria for cancer treatment. In fact, we would have cancer prevention and safe alternatives for cancer therapy.

While there is a rising tide of condemnation of how the cancer research industry goes about doing its business, plenty of fodder for an entire News With Views article unto itself, wed like to focus on the false promises of the cancer screening business, another financial cash cow of Cancer Incorporated that, unfortunately, sometimes causes damage and death on its own terms.

Cancer screening is big business. Mammograms for breast cancer, PSA tests for prostate cancer, CA-125 blood tests for ovarian cancer, biopsies of suspicious, warts, lumps, and bumps, colonoscopes for bowel cancer, pap tests for cervical cancer the list goes on. But the same question we ask of cancer therapy must be asked of cancer screening. Is it working?

Which brings us to the idea that perhaps cancer screening is another promotion for business in the hopes of finding people with early cancers so they can be swept into the modern medicine web. Once entangled they may find an earlier death, thanks to the many highly-toxic and risky treatments they may receive. Its strong talk but we do need to raise this issue.

Australias daily newspaper, the Australian, on August 20, 2005 ran an article along these lines with the headline, Think Again Before Cancer Screenings, Doctors Warn. The article continues with an even more blatant warning. HEALTHY people with no cancer symptoms should think carefully before undergoing cancer screening tests, because diseases they detect might never have been a threat and treating them can do more harm than good.

As The Australian points out that testing for prostate cancer, a positive result starts a cascade of pressure to do something about it even though many of the detected cancers would prove harmless if left alone. Doing something about it can mean various things.

When your PSA test for prostate cancer is high, first there is the biopsy which incidentally may spread a small, enclosed cancer by breaking open a protective capsule that the body wisely puts around it. Surgery is usually recommended, which may or may not get all the cancer but often takes away a mans ability to have an erection. Radiation, radium pellets, and chemotherapy are heavy artillery fired at this sensitive and defenseless organ.

Think of it this way. The body is producing cancer cells for a reason. A higher power is responsible for giving us life and that life has a certain blueprint, which is DNA. That DNA is programmed to make a perfect person. But if that DNA is disrupted anywhere along its journey to create a perfect cell in a perfect person then an imperfect cell is produced, which unchecked can lead to cancer. Its really very simple. What is not simple is the growing list of insults to DNA that can lead to abnormal cells. And, make no mistake, chemotherapy and radiation can also disrupt DNA. People who survive cancer with the aid of chemo and radiation have a much higher chance of developing cancer down the road.

Cells that are growing abnormally are routinely screened by the body. The liver and the immune system are on duty 24/7. But they take sick leave themselves when faced with days and weeks of chemotherapy and radiation. Something tells me that battering a 180-pound body in order to attack a half-ounce cancer just doesnt make sense. And it seems that other people feel the same way.

The Australian article quotes Gilbert Welch, professor of medicine at Dartmouth Medical School, in the US, who gives the statistics on cancer screening. He says that because we have such sensitive modern techniques at our disposal and can use very tiny needle biopsy specimens we can find cancer in a few cells. Therefore, "about a third of all adults will have some pathological evidence of thyroid cancer; about 40 per cent of women in their 40s will have microscopic evidence of breast cancer".

He goes on to say what is happening now is that we're finding these small abnormalities that meet the pathological criteria for cancer, but would never bother patients if they were left alone ... That's the real conundrum with cancer screening."

One of the major fallouts from cancer screening is the fear and stress that result from a cancer diagnosis. When given the results by a modern medical doctor who believes that chemo, radiation, and surgery are the only treatments you are likely to get one or all of the above. Then you live your life in fear of its return.

But there doesnt have to be a modern medicine monopoly on cancer screening or cancer therapy. Early screening is an important tool in traditional medicine (naturopathy, Chinese medicine, herbalism). We take pulses to determine body imbalance; look at urine; tongues, irises, and even use electrical machines to test acupuncture meridians and organs.

We want to know when the body is slightly off balance so we can institute counter measures. Not the sophisticated chemo and high technology radiation of modern medicine but simple diet changes cut out that synthetic crap you are eating and give your body some real food that you cook yourself- that sort of thing. We tell people to go on a detox program. Ive been working on one for years called The Body Rejuvenation Cleanse with Delia Quigley. When you eat a proper diet, do a periodic detox, and get some exercise, a lot of body imbalances sort themselves out.

Traditional medicine can also deal with a very early cancer diagnosis by using high-powered antioxidants, powerful herbal formulas, and deeper detoxification that removes heavy metals and chemicals from the body. There are also cancer cures that people experience every day when they take cancer therapies that boost the bodys immune system to the point cancer cells are purged.

Man of us know this information, but why isnt it being put into effect? Why arent the billions of cancer research dollars being put into clinics that teach people how to eat a healthy diet, detox their bodies, and treat them with natural cures?

Former New York State Assemblyman, Daniel Haley, wrote a book on ten cancer cures that have been suppressed and their practitioners vilified by the cancer industry over the past eighty years. Its called Politics in Healing: The Suppression and Manipulation of American Medicine. Howard Strauss wrote a book called, Dr. Max Gerson: Healing the Hopeless, about his grandfather, who cured cancer with diet and was literally hounded to death by the cancer establishment in the U.S.

The evidence is there but not enough people know about these cures; they are never publicized by the media. They are not part of our lexicon of knowledge and they should be. Every health-minded person needs to read these two books and understand how cancer can be prevented from happening in the first place and if cancer does occur, how it can be treated safely and sanely. And then we all need to demand that our doctors, local hospital boards, and our elected representatives read these books and tell us why these cures have been withheld from the public.
